HEALY LOSES HEAVILY IN “POPE IDOL”

Wednesday, May 25th, 2005

Well-known gambler and Monash Gryphons team manager Jono Healy lost heavily during the week as his personal choice, Cardinal Francis Arinze, lost in the final round of “Pope Idol” to German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.

“Mate, I reckon Francis stuffed up when he chose to go with a rap, ‘The Message,’ instead of a soul classic, you know, something like ‘Try A Little Tenderness.’ Now that’s a showstopper, and I’m sure Leets here agrees with me,” said Healy as his friend Chris Leeton nodded in agreement.

Arinze has impressed in earlier rounds with his renditions of songs such as “We Gotta Have Peace” by Curtis Mayfield, “What’s Goin’ On?” by Marvin Gaye and “Seven Days” by Craig David. However, it was Ratzinger who won with a piano ballad version of Rammstein’s “Du Hast,” which predictably caused Marcia Hines to cry, but more unexpectedly, Mark Holden and “Dicko” were also caught shedding a tear.

Ratzinger had also done well previously, arranging touching interpretations of songs such as Nena’s “99 Luftballons” and “Da Da Da” by Trio. Other performances worth noting included Archbishop George Pell’s tepid version of Peter Allen’s “Tenterfield Saddler” (which ex-Gryphon Michael Lewis derided as “hellish”), Italians Dionigi Tettamanzi and Angelo Scola performing a duet of Philip Bailey and Phil Collins’ “Easy Lover,” and the Mexican Norberto River Carrera, left side dressed as Walter Pocock, right side as Shakira, singing both halves of the Pocock/Shakira duet, “Mis Avios De Pescar En La Cocina.”

Despite his financial losses, Healy was circumspect and philosophical. “At the end of the day, I went chasing value instead of backing a proven favourite. Election aren’t like a horse race, where there are many intangible elements involved. I guess people never change, and don’t like change, so it’s easy to go with the safe option, even though I think that’s for wimps, personally. And what’s with the name Benedict XVI? What about something cool and edgy, like Ramon? See what I mean about being safe?”

After trailing for the best part of three and a half quarters, Monash Gryphons, aided by a double free kick (both goaled), won their encounter with Syndal Tally Ho by 14 points at Jordan Reserve on Saturday, in veteran defender Gerard Roche’s 150th game. It was not a promising start for the Gryphs, with the Synners scoring three of the game’s first goals, with only a George Harrak soccered goal bucking the trend, before Ryan Sharkey kicked one from outside the arc after a strong mark. Walter Pocock then goaled after Syndal had scored again, before the home side finished with the last two goals of the quarter to lead by three goals.

The Synners then opened the second quarter with a flourish, scoring the first five goals of the quarter, before Evan Bradshaw snapped this streak with a goal of his own, and the Gryphs added two more goals through Liam Clark and Chris Leeton to trail at half time by 29 points.

Clark goaled again to open the scoring in the third term before Bradshaw kicked his second in response to the Synners’ opener. It was goal for goal during the middle part of the term where Anthony Shufflebotham was prominent, bagging a brace of goals, before Clark bobbed up for his third. Crowd favourite Pocock then delighted visiting and home fans alike, scoring his second from an angled set shot after marking. Nick Rutherford then got the last goal of the quarter to bring the Gryphs within 14 points of the home side.

George Harrak got the first goal of the final quarter after a long Jono Watson kick from the centre, and, after some futile end to end play, and a rumble by the Gryphons’ interchange area, Clark goaled after receiving a 25m penalty to see the Gryphs take a one-point lead. The Synners struck back quickly before George Harrak kicked his third after being set up by Clark and Pocock. A tense struggle followed in the last few minutes before a rushed behind doubled the Gryphons’ lead. Jon Rutherford goaled after some great play by brother Nick, and after being bought down late, a second shot was subsequently awarded in addition to the first already being paid. Skipper Adrian Flowerday duly converted to give the Gryphs a 14 point lead, which remained as the siren went moments later to give the Gryphs victory.

Monash Gryphons finally secured their first win of 2005 with a fantastic last quarter that sealed an emphatic 42 point win over Power House at Ross Gregory Oval, with the form of ruckman/forward Chris Leeton a real highlight. Jason Harrak and Mark Paolucci also played their 50th games for the club. Leeton indeed scored the first goal of the game after a great pass from skipper Adrian Flowerday. Apart from a freak goal by Ryan Sharkey from an almost impossible angle, there was little for both sides to cheer about, with both defences on top early.

The Piranhas started the second quarter with a flourish, scoring the first three goals to put their noses in front, before Leeton goaled again after receiving a double 25 metre penalty. ‘The Showstopper’ would add another after a pass from Dan Baxter into the square.

George Harrak would add the Gryphons’ third goal of the quarter, finishing off a great end-to-end passage starting with Jordan Stratford. Power House scored again before Sharkey got his second after more good play by Liam Clark and Lee Wells out of the middle. The home side goaled again to trail the Gryphons by a straight kick at the main change.

It was goal for goal early in the third term, with Jay Garoni and Anthony Shufflebotham each goaling in response to their Power House opponents. Both defences were again having an impact, with Jono Watson and Andy McKenzie notable for the Gryphons. Leeton then goaled again, before the House got one back from a controversial free kick, before Clark opened his account to give the Gryphs a 10-point buffer going into the final term.

The last quarter could not have started better for the Gryphs, and particularly George Harrak, who scored three straight goals to really fire up the visitors and give them a head of steam. Power House replied with a couple of their own, but that man Leeton then scored twice in a row, both times after taking contested marks, and the latter shot sneaking in after a dramatic late swerve.

Flowerday then got on the board with a goal after an exchange with Jason Harrak, before the home side scored their last goal of the game. The influential Wells then goaled after a snap from the pocket, before, fittingly, Leeton kicked his seventh after the siren from yet another mark.

The Reserves won by 97 points to mark Andrew Clarke’s induction into the ranks of Gryphons centurions. Jeremy Landberg kicked five, while Vaughan Coffey was amongst the best players.

Despite a valiant effort in keeping up with D3 pacesetters St. John’s OC for the first three quarters, Monash Gryphons were unable to match the JOCs when the visitors moved up a gear in the last quarter in their match at East Caulfield Reserve on Saturday. The JOCs scored the first two goals early, and then more misfortune for the Gryphs when Andrew Waters was taken from the field with a knee injury. Nick Rutherford and Dave Bradshaw hit back with great snapped goals, the latter from a ball-up in the square after the JOCs kicker was too slow at the kickout. The visitors scored the last goal to narrowly lead at quarter time.

The JOCs were hot again early in the second term, scoring the first four goals, a couple of which were debatable, with Gareth Kent’s protestations he touched the ball off the boot in the first case, while Michael Baldwin was stiff to have a free awarded against him in the last instance. Monash hit back strong however, with the likes of Lee Wells, Daniel Baxter and Dave Bradshaw prominent. The Gryphs scored the last three goals through Liam Clark, Dave Bradshaw and Nick Rutherford. Jason Harrak was also starting to get a few touches while Gerard Roche and iron man Geoff Still was also solid.

Not a good start to the second half with the influential Dave Bradshaw leaving the game with an ankle injury, although Gryphon spirits were lifted somewhat after skipper Adrian Flowerday’s brilliant goal from deep in the pocket, but the JOCs cancelled that out with a goal of their own. In an otherwise dull quarter tainted by lots of stoppages, Geoff Still scored the only other goal of the quarter, as the Gryphs went into the final break six points down.

It went pear-shaped after “orange time” as the JOCs scored the first seven goals of the term, with the Gryphs unable to step up a notch, a cause not helped by their earlier injuries. Ryan Sharkey finally broke the streak, before the JOCs hit back. Jonny Rutherford scored the last goal for the Gryphs before the visitors scored the last goal of the game.
