The Gryphons started slowly before working their way back into the match near the end of the second quarter. Ross Hedley was marking well down forward and Nick Rutherford was winning the ball in the middle.
Elsternwick held a 2-3 goal advantage all day and Monash were not able to get any closer but did close the margin to 15 points at the last break. Tim Bourbon had a good second half, and Leigh Wells and Luke Wilson were rebounding well out of defence.
Three quick goals to start the last quarter killed off the contest but the Gryphons fought the match out right to the end to lose by 24 points.
ELSTERNWICK 4.8 (32) lost to MONASH GRYPHONS 15.24 (114)
Goals: Coxhead 6, Fletcher 5, Landberg 2, Pocock 1, White 1.
Best: Coxhead, Fletcher, Coffey, Barry, Clarke, White.
A great win by the reserves over Elsternwick. The only negative from the game was an inaccurate display in front of goals. Brett Coxhead showed his class up forward with six goals, and Rob Fletcher back from the seniors had a great game with five goals from the midfield.
The backline was marshalled well by Andrew Clarke and Vaughan Coffey, and Justin Hetherington was on fire early in the midfield.
Still plenty of improvement to come from the reserves though and an important match this week against Uni High.
