Seniors
MONASH GRYPHONS 11.9 (75) lost to OLD WESTBOURNE 12.14 (86)
Goals: Dooley 4, Leeton 2, Bourbon 2, Hedley 2, N Rutherford.
Best: Bourbon, Dooley, Wells, Baxter, N Rutherford, Wilkinson.
Definately a match we should have won, going into the last change with a 21 point lead and with a slight breeze at our backs but full credit to Old Westbourne who played extremely well in the last term. The Gryphons second and third quarters proved that we can mix it with the best teams in the competition, and hopefully next week we can put together four good quarters.
Dan Baxter, Tim Bourbon and Leigh Dooley continued their good form, whilst Leigh Wells and Luke Wilson were reliable as always in defence. Good to see Chris Leeton back into some good form with two majors, and another good performance from Mark Wilkinson in the ruck.
Reserves
MONASH GRYPHONS 13.14 (92) defeated OLD WESTBOURNE 7.5 (47)
Goals: Coxhead 7, Parker 2, Mandrakis, Hetherington, Fleming, Vesey.
Best: Coxhead, Vesey, Parker, Gladman, Pocock, Robilliard.
A great team effort by the reserves to convincingly beat the third team on the ladder by 45 points. The Gryphons started slowly but some great forward line play by Brett Coxhead and Matt Parker late in the first term gave the Gryphons a 15 point lead at the first change. In the second term, with Joel Gladman and Paul Rennison dominating the hitouts the Gryphons kept Old Westbourne scoreless and increased their lead to 39 points at the main break. The second half was an even affair with Old Westbourne matching the Gryphons but the game was won in the first half. Tim Vesey, Walter Pocock and Dave Charleson repelled all Old Westbourne attacks from the half backline, and the win cemented the Gryphons place on top of the reserves ladder.
This Saturday the Gryphons travel out to West Brunswick in another match against a top four side. We have proven that we can be competitive against the top teams, and this will certainly be another winnable match. The reserves will try and continue their winning streak, and hold on to top spot on the ladder.
