The Monash Gryphons came from four goals down early in the final term to nearly pinch a victory over a determined Swinburne side. Unfortunately for the Gryphs, Swinburne held on to win by two points, 14. 15(99) to 15.7 (97).
The Gryphs got off to a perfect start when Chris Leeton dobbed the opening goal of the match from 50 metres out, with what he described as ‘his best kick for some time’. Some missed chances in front of goals meant the Gryphons held a slight eight point advantage at quarter-time.
Playing across half-forward Lee Wells took some excellent marks in the second term as the Gryphons extended their lead to nine points at half-time.
Swinburne came out after half-time playing the better football and the Gryphons were caught napping as Swinnie booted six goals to three to open up an 11 point lead at the final change.
After Swinburne kicked two quick goals in the final term the Gryphs seemed doomed, but Freddie swung Wells back to defence, Lachie Vallance to centre half forward and Wal Pocock to full forward and the moves almost reaped rewards. Pocock kicked three majors in the final term, and even took what he described as ‘mark of the year’, but the closest the Gryphons could get was one point as Swinburne held on for the victory.
Jason Harrak did an excellent job in defence all day, Wells was his usual self, Leeton battled hard in the ruck and Stuart ‘Steggles’ Bracecamp was influential on the wing all day.
