Review:
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…” I can think of no better description of the Gryphons form from Saturday that those of Dickens.

It was a day of redemption, as Monash played possibly their most insipid quarter of football in three years and then played some of the most determined accountable football thereafter. It was clear that Sth Mornington had come to play as they hit us with a ‘Footballing Supernova’ from the opening bounce and barely allowed us to get our hands on the footy. When we did go forward it was with great foolishness and little structure. A complete domination by our opponents and a meek submission that had many supporters and officials seething!

In the pre generation Y era, just about any coach worth his salt would’ve torn strips off his players, many still would have, but Ozzie remained cool and collected, never once raising his voice, even though he was clearly disappointed with our efforts. He did mention and highlight the point however, that our performance was embarrassing to one of our greats (in Nick Rutherford).

From the opening minutes of the second quarter Monash were a different team. Chris Leeton began to dominate in the Ruck, Clint Mackie was getting his hands on the ball and Daniel Wills began to be presented with opportunities up forward. We had drawn level by half time, but still knew that South had their chance with the breeze in the third term.

The pre-formentioned stanza was our best. Lee Wells went back to his customary role across half back and began to link with Dan Baxter, we tackled and chased and followed up with far more ferocity that our opponents as the heat began to take its toll. Full marks to Laynton Allen who showed he may have what it takes to be the clubs key forward with a strong second half and four majors.

The coaching panel must be pleased that whilst we had the game sewn up at three quarter time we did not relent and pulled away in the last to record a comfortable win and a well earned two week break.

PUB NIGHT SATURDAY 17TH APRIL

Milestone – Nick Rutherford 150 Games

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

All at the Monash Gryphons wish to congratulate ‘gun midfielder’, Nick Rutherford 150 games this weekend against Sth Mornington. Nick, last year’s senior Best & Fairest Winner, has not only been an excellent contributor for the Gryphs over the years, but also played nearly 100 senior games for Albert Park FC before transferring in 2001. A hard worker on the track (ask him to show you his biceps!!), Nick has recently started a family and runs his own successful DJ business. A great role model to all the youngsters at Monash. Well Done.

Review:
It was with great anticipation and expectation that the Gryphons cohort arrived at Allard Park with at the weekend, as the week leading up to the first game of the season is always a good one. However, within minutes of the reserves game beginning, it was clear that this day at Nth Brunswick was going to be no walk in the park.

We met a North Brunswick outfit that had clearly bolstered their stocks over the summer and began to make us earn each and every possession. The reserves probably let the game slip with poor kicking at goal, however, the opposite was true in the seniors, where our excellent conversion rate probably got us the four points. Coach Osborne would be happy to take the win, but made a point to say that we had played well below potential in the post match media conference.

What was encouraging was the excellent games from many debutantes and lesser established Gryphons Senior Players, particularly, Nick Booth who probably played his best ever game for the club and went along way into ensuring we got the points with his relentless attack on the ball. Others to shine included, Jeremy Crow, Tim Madden and Daniel Wills (all first gamers) which hold us in good stead for coming weeks.

We must ensure we play four quarters of the type of desire and determination we displayed in the final stanza if we are to continue to improve.
